Grootse toekomst voorspeld voor Linux en OSS

<p>Bij aanvang van een nieuw jaar zijn er altjd wel voorspellingen van wat ons te wachten staat. Een klein artikeltje op <a href="http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?si ... lashdot</a> maakt gewag van een studie waar de verwachting uitgesproken wordt dat de komende vijf jaren opensource software (OSS) en m.n. Linux de zakelijke markt gaan veroveren. Dat is al wel vaker voorspeld, maar toch altijd leuk om het weer eens bevestigd te zien. De studie is uitgevoerd door <a href="http://www.saugatech.com/">Saugatuck Technology</a> en de naam van de studie is <em>Booming Support for Mission-Critical Application Workloads on Linux</em>. Waar al uit af te leiden valt dat men meent dat vooral cruciale zakelijke applicaties op Linux gaan draaien. Het rapport is alleen te downloaden als .PDF, maar dan moet u wel een account bij Saugatuck hebben (wat ik voor de gelegenheid maar even gedaan heb) en mag niet in zijn geheel -zonder toestemming- gepubliceerd worden. operating system and applications are huge.<li>Microsoft’s thawing toward Linux is now easier to understand when
faced with such data – even as Windows continues to grow as the other main
server platform of choice.<li>One <em>Software as a service</em> (SaaS) provider in Saugatuck’s research claims savings
of more than 70 percent in operating system license and maintenance fees
alone by utilizing Linux, while enabling easier and less expensive expansion of
systems and services due to the open, standardized nature of Linux.<li>The
business advantages are obvious – but not yet being acted upon or realized by
most large vendors, who remain tied to legacy, cash-cow operating systems.</li></ul></p>

<p>Kortom, de lage kosten, de stabiliteit en de grotere mate van continuïteit bij diverse OSS applicaties i.c.m. het Linux besturingssysteem gaan het helemaal maken, aldus Saugatuck. De tijd zal het leren.</p>
